Samurai Warriors 2 (PC, PS2, Xbox 360)
This game is a pure button-masher with a little bit of strategy. You play various characters in battles throughout Japan’s history (and the characters are actually accurate, as in they existed and fought during the time period the game describes). The goal is to kill all the enemy leaders while keeping as many of your own leaders alive as possible, and various things will happen during the battle to make it more difficult (reinforcements, defectors, etc.)
The characters level up over time and get new equipment, and you can also get a bodyguard and a horse. The attack combos are pretty simple and repetitive, but it’s entertaining over time because of the sheer amount of enemies you tear through. The levels for each character get progressively harder, and some of the final levels for characters are nearly impossible. But the innovations that come with each level always leave you guessing about what’s going to happen.
