Opinion: Boobs, Bad Games and Misogyny

If game makers want to distance themselves from cheap marketing tactics, there’s a really easy solution…

An interesting article from IGN on how marketing tactics around the chest.

Also, it features a (well deserved) criticism on this.

I’m really happy to see to see someone on IGN trying with this kind of thing, and I like that this is being talked about on a big gaming site instead of just in the comments on a LiveJournal post or something but let’s face it: until IGN as a whole stops publishing misogynistic crap (and hires more female writers, because the editorial staff is currently 90% male), it doesn’t mean shit for one of their articles to examine misogyny in the industry; they’re one of many publications who’ve been part of the problem in the first place. If IGN is trying to STOP doing this, and posts like these are baby steps toward them knocking that shit off permanently, then that is really really GREAT because I would love to be able to keep up on my hobbies without being banged over the head with “lol women” everywhere I click. And from what I’ve been told, they’ve been doing a good job recently of staying on topic and also apologizing for fuckups when people get mad about them (which is part of the problem, because the fuckups are usually able to be seen from a mile away and shouldn’t go forth and be published at all, but eh). I don’t know, man. I’m torn. I want to encourage this, I hope to see a lot more of this from IGN, but at the same time it’s just another punch in the gut because I doubt anything is really going to change.

As always, beware of the comments (even more so on this one, they are a stinking cesspit of misogyny).
